Congratulations, you've got the keys! Moving into your first home is an incredibly exciting milestone, but it can also feel a little overwhelming when you realize just how much you need to set up. Beyond the big furniture pieces, there's a myriad of smaller, essential items that will turn your new house into a comfortable, functional home.

To help you get settled without too much stress, we've put together a checklist of must-have items for first-time homeowners.

The Essentials: Get Your Home Running

These are the absolute basics you'll need almost immediately.

  • Cleaning Supplies: Before you even unpack, you'll likely want to give everything a good scrub.

  • All-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner

  • Sponges, rags, paper towels

  • Broom and dustpan, mop and bucket

  • Vacuum cleaner (a good one is an investment that pays off!)

  • Trash cans and liners (for every room!)

  • Basic Tool Kit: You'd be surprised how often you'll need one.

  • Hammer, screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), pliers

  • Adjustable wrench, tape measure, utility knife

  • Picture hanging kit (hooks, nails)

  • Safety First: Don't overlook these crucial items.

  • Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors (check existing ones and replace if old)

  • Fire extinguisher (for the kitchen, at least)

  • First-aid kit

  • Flashlight (and extra batteries!)

  • Utilities & Connectivity:

Even if you plan to order takeout for the first week, you'll eventually need to cook.

  • Cookware & Bakeware:

  • Frying pan, saucepan, baking sheet

  • Basic pot set (if you plan on cooking regularly)

  • Utensils:

  • Spatula, ladle, whisk, tongs

  • Can opener, bottle opener, vegetable peeler

  • Knives (a good chef's knife and paring knife are a great start)

  • Dishes & Glassware:

  • Plates, bowls, mugs

  • Drinking glasses

  • Silverware

    Small Appliances:

  • Coffee maker (a lifesaver on moving day!)

  • Toaster

  • Storage & Linens:

  • Food storage containers

  • Dish towels, oven mitts, pot holders

Bedroom & Bathroom: Your Personal Sanctuaries

These are the rooms where you'll unwind and get ready.

  • Pillows and pillowcases

  • Sheets, comforter/duvet

  • Curtains or blinds (for privacy!)

Bathroom:

  • Shower curtain and liner

  • Bath mats

  • Towels (bath, hand, washcloths)

  • Toilet brush and plunger (you'll thank us later)

  • Soap dispenser and toothbrush holder

  • Toilet paper (don't forget this!)

Beyond the Basics: Making it a Home

Once the essentials are covered, you can start thinking about these items that add comfort and personality.

  • Window Treatments: Curtains, blinds, or shades for privacy and light control in all rooms.

  • Basic Furniture: Couch/sofa, dining table and chairs, dressers, nightstands. Don't feel pressured to buy everything at once!

  • Lighting: Lamps (floor and table) can drastically change the ambiance of a room.

  • Decor: A few plants, a couple of throw pillows, or a piece of art can make a huge difference in making your house feel like a home.

  • Extension Cords and Power Strips: You'll always need more than you think.

  • Laundry Supplies: Detergent, dryer sheets, laundry hamper.

Pro-Tips for First-Time Homeowners:

  • Start Small: You don't need to buy everything at once. Prioritize the essentials and build from there.

  • Budget Wisely: Moving is expensive! Set a budget for your initial purchases and stick to it.

  • Shop Smart: Look for sales, consider second-hand items in good condition, and compare prices.

  • Ask for Help: Don't be afraid to ask friends or family if they have spare items you can borrow or have.

  • Make it Your Own: Most importantly, have fun personalizing your new space!

Moving into your first home is an adventure. By having these must-have items on hand, you'll be well-equipped to tackle the initial setup and truly start enjoying your new space. Happy nesting!
